Blog # 372 Jesus and the Bible

# 372  Jesus and the Bible

           Did it ever occur to you to gather together the various references in the New Testament where Jesus quotes or refers to the Bible as the source of His identity, the goal of His life, etc.?  I did it recently and it was an interesting and useful experience.

           Here are the references I gathered. You may want to look them up for yourself.  Putting them together creates an impression that is different from considering them one at a time individually.

            The references in Matthew are: 4: 4;  4:6;  21: 13;  26:24;  26: 31.     In Mark we have:  9: 12;
11: 17;  12 : 10;  14 : 21;  14: 27.    In Luke it is:  4:4;  4: 17 - 21;  7: 27;  24: 27.   And in John's Gospel:  7: 38;  7: 42;  10: 35;  13: 18;  17: 12.  And after the death of Jesus, John himself adds:  19: 24;   and 19: 36 - 37.

            Than I continued to look up references in which the Biblical writers refer to the Scriptures.  Here are some samples:  Romans 1: 17;  2: 24; 3: 4;  3:10;  4: 3;  4: 17;  8: 36;  9: 7;  9:13;  9: 33;
10: 11;   10: 15;  11: 2;   11: 8;  11 26;  15: 3;   15: 9;  15 21.      1 Corinthians: 1: 19;  3:19;  6:16;
10: 7;  15: 27;  15: 45;   15: 54.   1 Timothy 4: 13;  2 Timothy: 3; 16;    2 Peter 3: 15.16.

                Jesus read and used the Bible in His ministry.  Paul and the other Biblical writers did the
same. Down through the entire history of the Church believers found comfort, inspiration, challenge,  direction for their lives, strength and hope in the Bible.  May it ever be a significant part of what is God's gift of 'daily bread' for each of us, and may we live out in the third dimension of our lives  the central message of the Bible: God is real; He loves us all; and in Him we are one!
